The Common Sense Guide to Being a Great Podcast Guest – Part 2

Studio microphone in front of a sound mixer and computers in broadcasting radio studio. New radio station studio.

Congratulations!

You just finished guesting in a podcast episode, and in your humble opinion, the recording session went really, really well.

You even checked every box on how to be a great podcast guest. Awesome!

Think you’re done? Not so fast.

This is your chance to build a lasting relationship with the host (and other influencers in your field) so do something that makes you sticks out. You’d be amazed at how many people think it stops once they hang up the phone or leave the studio.

Say Thanks

This is an obvious one – thank your host by name at the end of the interview. What’s not so obvious? Send your host a thank you email with all the relevant links (social media, website, promotions, products/services discussed). It makes his/her life easier when creating an introduction or article for the episode. Whenever possible, I also include my personal notes on the topic.

Promote It

Like I said before, spend time promoting your guest appearance to your own audience and contacts before and after it goes live. When you share on social media, make sure you’re giving your fans and followers a reason why they should care and tag those who are involved to let them know you’re engaged (and potentially reach their followers). So instead of saying “Check out my interview that went live today”,

…say something specific like,

“I share how I achieved financial freedom as an entrepreneur with no employees, no office and no inventory in this interview with @kcseopros”

Other podcasters will want you on their show if they see the amount of effort you put in because no matter how popular their show, they still need the amplification as much as you do.

Follow up

Re-engage your host and request for an introduction to other podcast hosts. You might be squirming in your seat right now but if you followed everything I’ve told you so far, this shouldn’t be an awkward conversation. Remember, podcast hosts are always looking for great guests – they’d be doing the podcast community a huge favor. =)

Consequently, send follow up emails thanking your subscribers for all their support. This will also serve as a gentle reminder for those who haven’t had a chance to listen in so really utilize these emails to tease more of the content in the episode. Don’t forget to give your audience a clear call to action (like, share, tweet, subscribe, etc) and make it easy for them to follow through by including the appropriate links and share buttons.

Blog It.

You already invested time doing the interview and effort promoting the episode so why not make the most of it?! Use it as content for your own blog or podcast page – of course, this should be something that you’ve cleared with your podcast host beforehand. Add links to your media page or add a copy of the recording and a transcript of the episode to your blog to instantly create awesome content.

A final thought…

Podcast guesting is a great opportunity to spread the word about your passion and connect with like-minded individuals as well as niche audiences. Following these tips will help you maximize your guesting opportunities.
